Panelists:
 
Marisa Bier, University of Washington, will discuss the creation of a university liaison role for building relationships between the UW teacher education program and the schools with which it partners and places student teachers, specifically in ways that develop understandings of education as an academically taught clinical practice profession. Aja LaDuke, University of Connecticut, will discuss her involvement in a variety of initiatives developed by the induction committee, including a statewide Beginning Teacher Conference, online mentoring services, and partnerships with the State Department of Education to support first- and second-year teachers in Connecticut.  (Powerpoint; Handout)
 
Eliza Spang, Stanford University, will discuss her research on the relationship between content-specific methods courses in Stanford’s teacher education program and the teaching practices of the science teacher graduates and their students’ understanding of science.

TNE institutions are attempting to share information about their accomplishments to a range of audiences, both within and outside the university. For this set of discussions, breakout groups are organized by audience and/or purpose of the dissemination effort. In each session, site representatives will lead off discussion with a brief description of a dissemination strategy or challenge. The remaining time will be devoted to facilitated discussion of strategies, challenges, resources, and next steps for moving forward with dissemination efforts.

TNE institutions are attempting to institutionalize or sustain a range of activities implemented under the aegis of TNE. For this set of discussions, breakout groups are organized by a specific type of challenge or the nature of the activity to be sustained. In each session one or two site representatives will lead off discussion with a brief description of a strategy or challenge.  The remaining time will be devoted to facilitated discussion of strategies, challenges, resources, and next steps for moving forward with efforts to sustain or institutionalize TNE.

Panelists:
 
Sarah Enterline, Boston College, will talk about her work with an interdisciplinary group of researchers who have developed a portfolio of quantitative, qualitative, and mixed-methods studies designed to create a data-rich environment for policy and program decisions.  She will focus on Boston College’s attempt to build a successful survey system, which has already had a substantial impact on groups within BC as well as outside the university and internationally. Charles Igel, University of Virginia, will highlight information about the conceptual framework for TNE research being conducted at UVA’s Center for the Advanced Study of Teaching and Learning as well as the preliminary analysis of data collected on the Curry School of Education participant pool.
  
Brett Merritt, Michigan State University, will talk about how a research group is exploring pre-service teachers’ experiences as students in large, undergraduate science courses and seeking to explicate ways these undergraduate experiences might contribute to their understanding of science and science teaching.
