Using Observation Protocols to Assess Candidates and Teachers

Session Description:  What is the evidence that teaching performance, identified through observation, is linked empirically with pupil learning?  When researchers incorporate observations of teaching into their studies, what strategies should be used to ensure the quality of the analysis, the validity of the observation report, and the value of the measuring instrument?  Representatives from Teachers for a New Era (TNE) and Learning Network institutions will explore methods of candidate and teacher observation as a strategy to inform teaching and practice. This panel will also discuss the challenges and strategies associated with developing and using observational methods.

Building the Clinical Practice Continuum

Session Description: Although clinical experiences are typically viewed as central features of teacher education programs, research on the quality and effects of these experiences remains limited. How can institutions develop a continuum of clinical experiences that begins with—or even precedes—entry into a teacher education program and extends through induction and professional development? In this session, representatives from Teachers for a New Era (TNE) and Learning Network institutions will explore a number of critical issues, including the roles of clinical faculty, assessment of candidates and novice teachers, recruitment, selection, and orientation of cooperating teachers, and the impact of school and district policies.

The Impact of Induction on Teacher Education

Session Description: Exemplary teacher education programs across the country are now introducing new approaches to formally structured induction. One of the Teachers for a New Era (TNE) design principles calls for a two-year residency, during which both education and arts and sciences faculty provide guidance, mentoring, and supervision to novice teachers. This session will explore different induction strategies, including district-based, university-based, and electronic approaches.

Using Evidence for Program Improvement

Session Description: Teachers for a New Era (TNE) emphasizes reliance upon empirical evidence as the only sound basis for radical transformation of university-based teacher education. When a culture of evidence takes hold, how are teacher education programs and their faculty changed? What new assumptions and practices guide their work? This session will describe how TNE and Learning Network institutions are using evidence for changes in programs, courses, clinical experiences, and assessment strategies.
